XYZ

Let's talk about XYZ coordinates. For now, we are just going to cover some basic information, for the benefit of those of you who still may be too young to have learned any plane geometry, or maybe you just haven't had any reason to think about XYZ in the last thirty years or so.

Looking at the image, you see three lines with arrows on the ends. The arrow means that the line can continue in that direction indefinitely. Each line is an axis of the coordinate system. There is an X, a Y and a Z axis. They cross, or intersect each other at point zero(0). Now take notice that there is a plus and a minus side to each line.

This is all you need to know at this point. It is the first step in learning to create virtual worlds and you will get additional information about coordinate systems as you progress. Eventually, you will be able to visualize points in space and the relationship of one coordinate system to another.
