Lesson Plan

We all have our own way of studying and there are always subjects we like less than others. Here is a lesson plan for you to use, if you wish. It was not compiled by some academic association. It is just a suggested path to follow while learning VRML.

One of the most important concepts to keep in mind is that most of what you learn will not come from writing scripts, but from your experience viewing and manipulating objects in a virtual world. Zooming in and out on an object on the viewer, or turning it to see what happens to the shading, and then changing the shape to see what happens are experiences you will be glad you have when you build your virtual world.

Discussion

Please review all of the discussion topics first. The information contained here will help you prepare for what you are about to learn.

Geometry

One of the reasons it is good to work with each geometric object is to begin creating a script file. Once you have copied the scripts for each of the objects into your VRML file, you will have started a reference library. Later, if you want to create a box, you only have to bring up your "box" script on Wordpad, save the file under a new filename and make whatever modifications you need for the new box, without rewriting the script.

There is another really great advantage to gaining experience in VRML. When you watch those 3D and Virtual Reality cartoons, movies and games, you will know about the theories used to create them and how they were created.

What comes next?

The next step is to create your own Virtual World. It does not take much time to get to this point. Depending on how serious you are about this new venture, you could be ready in one, or two days. There is a great deal of information to cover, which will be added to this site very soon. In the mean time, I am trying to teach you the basic material needed to create your first world. Do not be mislead by the word "basic", you will have learned enough VRML to create a very nice virtual world. I am sure you will be very proud of it.

What new material is coming?

Here is a short list of some of the upcoming major subjects:

1. More about "Transform".
2. More about appearance.
3. Extrusion
4. Mapping images.
5. Transparency
6. Animate an object by touch.
7. Text
8. More about positioning objects.
9. Rotating objects.
10. Motion sensor.
11. Making objects glow.
12. Making objects blink.
13. Animating transparency.
14. Elevation grids.
15. Lighting your world.
16. Create shiny objects.
17. Adding fog.
18. Adding sound.
19. Proximity sensors.
20. Creating GIF Animations.

Let's keep the list short. There are many things to be said about VRML, but the main point is that almost everything in the real world can be duplicated in your virtual world. I have much work to do to bring this information to you. Please be patient. Thank you very much.
