Joining Second Life is FREE. There are a number of places where you can get free clothes and other articles, so that it is entirely possible to play on SL and never spend a penny, indefinitely. This plan usually works for a while, but eventually there will come a time when you want other clothes, or maybe even your own home. This will require a small investment.
Presently, US$1 = L$254(254 Lindens). The Linden is the currency in Second Life. You can buy Lindens with other currency, but we use the US dollar as an example.
So, you ask, "What can I get for L$254?". A lady can go to Enky's Dollar Store and buy a very nice pair of high heel shoes for L$1. They come with a "sexy walk" attachment, so when your avatar wears them it will walk with a sexy swing of the hips. All that for less than one penny. Both men and women can go to any of the thousands of clothing stores and buy a very nice oufit for about L$195, as an average. L$195 = US$0,77.

Later, after you have had a chance to learn more about Second Life and found an area of interest, you will be able to make a good decision about spending money.
